Woodworking Design Software Enables Cutting Dado on Surfaces

After listening to users react to our newest versions of SketchList 3D we heard that people were disappointed that – as a joinery type – the ability to cut dados on board surfaces was missing.  So indeed we fixed that shortcoming.  The thing is – for a few reasons – this joinery type is not listed in the joinery type pull down list.    One reason is that until now we’ve thought that joinery affects board edges and not surfaces (well you can’t always think of everything…) and the other is that we already had most of what we needed to make dados.  It was just called a non-round hole.  The trick for us was to allow the hole to continue off the edges of the board.  All set!

To specify the dado you just select a surface of a board and click non-round holes.  You locate the dado from the bottom – left (like all else in SketchList 3D) enter the width, height, and depth of cut and you are all set.  By switching the values you can ‘cut’ the dado in the vertical direction as well.  Make sure to name you dado and provide notes if you like.

Dado cutsThis type of detail is useful in cabinet design software (furniture design software) since you can create some very nice detailed ‘photos’ using the photo realistic 3D images.  These details are useful for showing a potential client the care you take with the details of his or her project.

You can see a detailed video of how to cut the dado at VIDEO.
