I have been an amateur woodworker for over fifteen years. I took the design of my work more seriously as my skills improved. Determined to better design my work, I went to some workshops and explored using computer software to help me.
The workshops were great, but the software available at that time was not. It did not do what I needed or wanted it to do for me. Thinking I needed a more powerful solution I tried to teach myself CAD. I found that CAD is just not ‘user friendly’ enough. The author of one of my favorite reviews of CAD software wrote about how difficult it is. “My first test was if I could figure out how to draw a line. Many of the packages failed that simple test.”
I felt that software that was so complex that it takes weeks or months to learn, requires special classes, or requires a consultant’s help, is an unacceptable solution.
Out of frustration at the lack of suitable furniture design software, I wrote a ‘manual’ for the furniture design package I would buy and use if it was available. After a while I turned those ideas into SketchList 3D.
