New SketchList 3D woodworking design software users sometimes think they must design projects from scratch. But, that is not the case. I once did a video {CLICK} where I created an entertainment center from cabinets in my library. I used standard objects, customized them, and ended up with a wall unit.  All done in a short time frame.

If you are in the custom woodworking business – you are concerned with the ability to customize AND save time.

So let’s have some fun.

I am inviting you, current SketchList 3D users, to participate in a contest.

Winners will receive a free upgrade to SketchList 3D Pro – or a second key if you already are a Pro user.

It’s the customorph contest!  What’s that?  Well, it’s taking an existing project and making something different from it using the tools in SketchList 3D.

  • Customize – to build, fit, or alter according to individual specifications.
  • Morph – to transform an image by computer.
  • Customorph – to build, fit, or alter according to individual specifications by transforming with your computer.

I customorph all the time. When I’m doing an online training, for example. I might take a base unit, clone it, change the size of the cloned unit, then clone existing drawers, and use the SketchList 3D tools and commands to make something entirely different from that original unit. I enjoy it.

So here’s the opportunity for you — a customorphing contest using SketchList .

Here’s what you need to do to enter the contest and win a free SketchList 3D woodworking design software upgrade.

  1. Open an existing project in SketchList 3D. Take a screen shot of the image area so we can see what that project looks like. Write a two or three sentence description of your project. Export the project.
  2. Now customorph that project into something else.
    • Maybe you want to:
      • Turn it – or part of it – into a bookshelf.
      • Change the size and make it into an L shaped project.
      • Add some doors or drawers.
      • Be creative and come up with something interesting and maybe useful.
    • The categories of projects we are interested in, although not limited to, are as follows.
      • Shop cabinets
      • Bed and bunk-bed
      • Desk
      • Vanity
      • Mud room storage
      • Fireplace mantle
      • Bookshelves
      • Entertainment centers
      • Kitchen cabinet
      • Storage units
      • Tables
  1. Open your existing project in SketchList 3D woodworking design software. Take a take a few screenshots of the steps you take to create the new design. Write a sentence or two describing each step in the final design along with a screen shot of the image area so we can see what the transformed project looks like. If you take the time to make a few shop drawings of your project with dimensions you’ll get extra points in the judging.
  2. Attach all your materials to an email and send it to info@sketchlist.com.

Are there rules? Yes.

  • The original product must be build-able. It must be designed so someone can look at the drawings and cut lists and build the project.
  • The original product or the transformed project (hopefully both) should be of some substance. We are not really looking for you to take a box and change it into another box. That may work, but probably not.
  • Winners are selected by SketchList.
  • Acknowledge that the original project and the transformed project become the property of SketchList.
  • Judging takes place March 8, 2018.

Are there rewards? Yes.

  • The best entry in each category will receive a free upgrade to SketchList 3D Pro. The winner is determined by SketchList 3D employees and or consultants. If there is a tie, in the opinion of the judges, both entries will win an upgrade.
  • If you already use SketchList 3D Pro and win the contest, you will receive a second copy of SketchList 3D Pro.
  • All winners will be announced on the SketchList 3D social media pages (follow our Facebook page HERE, LinkedIn page HERE) along with images of their before and after projects.
  • There will be a maximum of 10 winners based on best design.

Have a little fun with this if you choose to participate!

You probably already have a project you can use as your starting point.  Give some thought as to what you might customorph from that. Be creative.  Make someone looking at your designs on our website say: “Hey that’s really cool.”
